Dinner As It Might Have Been at Kenilworth 760 Years Ago

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012

My latest article posted at at the English Historical Fiction Authors website takes a look at a typical dinner at Kenilworth, at the time that Simon de Montfort and his family were in residence.

The article details an early afternoon meal as served to Eleanor, Countess of Leicester and a small number of invited guests, in the absence of the Earl Montfort. Fully researched, this glimpse into life in the Thirteenth century includes a number of recipes and complete details for their preparation as well as the presentation of a stately meal.

King Lear’s Town – A Little History of the City of Leicester

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

I’ve got another article over at at the English Historical Fiction Authors website on the history of the City of Leicester.

The city’s colorful history didn’t begin when Henry III granted Simon de Montfort VI the Earldom, however.  I’ve presented the reader with a good deal of background from the time of the conquest of England by the Angles and Saxons.  Evidence suggests that it was also the site of the castle of King Lear.

Enjoy! And feel free to post comments here at on my blog.

8th centennial?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Was Simon de Montfort born in 1209? Most historians lean toward that date. He would have been twenty or twenty-one when he arrived in England: at the point of coming of age if he had been in wardship. I don’t think it was his “coming of age,” but rather his brother Amaury’s disqualification for the inheritance when he was made Marshall of France, that prompted Simon’s arrival to press the family claim on the earldom of Leicester. My own view is he was probably born around 1213. Let’s hope that by 2013 the founder of modern democracy will be well enough known to have a splendidly happy birthday celebration.
