He was the 1st Count of NOLA.  He was married to  Margherita  ALDOBRANDESCA  di GROSSETTO, Contessa ereditaria di Soana.

Married in 6 June 1293 Romano  ORSINI (1268- 1327), senator of Rome,  Conte de PITIGLIANO, Royal Vicar of Rome in 1326.

His father Gentile II ORSINI  (1246? – 1318?), son of Bertoldo ORSINI Count of ROMAGNA  (d. 1288), Senator of Rome, Podestà di Viterbo, Grand Justiciar of the kingdom of Sicily in 1314.

His mother ? Claricia di RUFFO  (b.~1250?), daughter of Giovanna de AQUINO  (1232? – 1300?), daughter of Tomasso II de AQUINO, Conte di ACERRA, poss. nephew of Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Margaretha of GERMANY  (b.~1215?), daughter of Emperor Frederick II de Hohenstaufen.

Married Sueva del BALZO (Sanchia des BAUX), (~1296 ~ 1375), Countess of Soleto, heiress of des Baux, daughter of Hugues des Baux (b. ~1277), seigneur de Grandissart, conte di Soleto, son of Bernard III des BAUX, seigneur de Courthezon, co-prince de Orange (1245? – 1305? Holy Land), son of Raymond II des Baux ( d. 1278?), co-prince de Orange, son of Guillaume II des BAUX (1195? – 1239?), co-prince de Orange, a troubadour. His father Guillaume Ier des Baux (c.1155-1218), est prince d’Orange et vice-roi du Royaume d’Arles ; il appartient à une grande famille de la noblesse provençale, les Baux.

Guillaume I  est le fils de Bertrand des Baux, le premier prince d’Orange, et de Thiberge de Sarenom, tous deux poètes et troubadours. En 1215 (ou 1214), à Metz quand Frédéric II souhaite affirmer son pouvoir en Provence, Guillaume reçoit le Royaume d’Arles et de Bourgogne ce qui signifie probablement la vice-royauté de ce royaume. Opportuniste, il soutient le pape et la croisade de Simon de Montfort contre son rival le comte de Toulouse et marquis de Provence Raymond VI, mais fait prisonnier par les Avignonais, les fidèles alliés de Raymond, il connait une mort malheureuse en étant égorgé, ou, selon d’autres sources, écorché vif et découpé en morceaux.

(~1360 – ~ 1422) married in 1381 Francesco del Balzo, 1st Duke of Andria, Conte di Montescaglioso e Avellino,  Governor of Naples, son of Bertrand de Baux, Conte di Andria e Montescaglioso & his second wife Marguerite d’Aulnay (~1330 – ~ 1404). Their children:

A.1. Margherita del BALZO (Marguerite des BAUX) (~1384 -~ 1469), contessa di Conversano, married Pierre de Luxembourg, Knight of Golden Fleece (~ 1390 - 1433), son of Jean de Luxembourg, Sire of Beauvois and of Marguerite d’Enghien, suo jure Countess of Brienne and of Conversano, suo jure Heiress of Enghien. Pierre was  Count of Saint-Pol from 1430, which he inherited from his aunt Jeanne of Luxembourg, Countess of Saint-Pol and Ligny; he also inherited, on an unknown date, Marguerite’s fiefs of Brienne and of Conversano, thus becoming Count of Brienne and of Conversano.

1. Thibaut de Luxembourg, Seigneur de Fiennes, Count of Brienne, Bishop of Le Mans, cardinal  (1410 – 1477) married “Philippotte” Philippine  de Melun (b. 1420), dame de Sottenghien. Their children:

1.1. Guillemette de Luxembourg (~1442 – before April 1500) married Amé de Sarrebruck, seigneur de Braine et Commercy. Their son Robert de Sarrebruck, comte de Roucy married Marie d’ Amboise (d. 1519), daughter of Charles I d’ Amboise, seigneur de Chaumont, sister of Charles II d’Amboise (d. 1511), gouverneur de la ville de Paris, du duché de Milan, de la seigneurie de Gênes et de la province de Normandie. Lieutenant Général en Lombardie en 1501, puis vice-roi de Lombardie. En 1506, il fait venir Léonard de Vinci, qu’il avait en grande estime, à Milan.

1.2. Jacques de Luxembourg, seigneur de Gavre (~1445-1487 or 1517)

1.3.  ”Madeleine” ou Marguerite de Luxembourg, (~1450 – after 1498) married Jacques Chabot, seigneur d’Aspremont (~1450 –bef.1496). Their son Philippe Chabot, comte de Charny, amiral de France (~1494 -1543)

1.4.  François de Luxembourg (b. ~1455) married his cousin Louise de Savoie (1467- 1530), daughter of Janus de Savoie, comte de Faucigny et de Geneve, and granddaughter of Anne de Lusignan, Princess of Chyprus, Duchess de Savoie. Their son François de Luxembourg, vicomte de Martigues (~1490 – 1553) married Charlotte de Brosse.

3. Louis de Luxembourg, Comte de Saint-Pol, de Brienne, de Ligny, and de Conversano, Constable of France (1418-1475).

3.1. Married 1. Jeanne de Bar suo jure Countess of Marle and Soissons, Dame d’Oisy, Viscountess of Meaux (~1415- 1462), the only child of Robert of Bar, Count of Marle and Soissons, Sire d’Oisy, who was killed at the Battle of Agincourt. In 1418, her mother married secondly John II of Luxembourg, Count of Ligny and de Guise (1392- 5 January 1441), son of John of Luxembourg, Sire de Beauvois and Marguerite of Enghien, Countess of Brienne and of Conversano. It was Jeanne’s stepfather John, who received Joan of Arc as his prisoner, and kept her at his castle of Beaurevoir. Joan, who was three years Jeanne’s senior was placed in the care of Jeanne, her mother and Jeanne of Luxembourg, John’s elderly aunt. The three ladies did all they could to comfort Joan in her captivity, and unsuccessfully tried to persuade her to abandon her masculine clothing for feminine attire. They earned Joan’s gratitude for their kind and compassionate treatment of her. Despite the pleas of Jeanne and the other two women, John sold Joan of Arc to the English, who were his allies, for 10,000 livres.

They married in 1435. Louis had been brought up by his paternal uncle, who was Jeanne’s stepfather, John II of Luxembourg, Count of Ligny and Guise; therefore the young couple were well-acquainted with one another. John designated Louis as his heir to the counties of Ligny and Guise.

-  Marie de Luxembourg, vicomtesse de Meaux (~1467/72 – 1547) married firstly, her uncle, Jacques de Savoie, Count of Romont, by whom she had a daughter, Françoise Louise de Savoie, wife of Heinrich III von Nassau-Dillenburg, . Married François de Bourbon, Count of Vendôme, son of Jean de Vendome,  by whom she had six children including Charles de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme (1489- 1537), and Antoinette de Bourbon (1493 – 1583), wife of Claude de Lorraine, Duke of Guise and grandmother of Maria Stuart.

- Françoise of Luxembourg, Dame d’Enghien (d. 1523), married Philip of Cleves-Ravenstein, Captain General of Flanders.

c. Jacqueline de Luxembourg (~1435 -~1500) married Philippe de Croÿ,  seigneur d’Arschot, comte de Porcien, son of Marguerite de Lorraine, daughter of Marie d’ Harcourt, comtesse d’ Aumale (descendant of Laure de Montfort). Their son Guillaume II de Croy (1458 – 1521), duc de Soria, de Arce et de Rocca Guglielma, in the kingdom of Naples, précepteur du prince Charles, future Emperor Karl V

d.  Antoine de Luxembourg, Count of Brienne, Roussy, and de Ligny (~1440 – ~1519) married:

- Antoinette de Bauffremont, comtesse de Charny (~1450 – 1483), daughter of Pierre de Bauffremont, comte de Charny and granddaughter of Jeanne de Vergy, descendant of Jean de Joinville. Their daughter Philiberte de Luxembourg (d. 1539), comtesse de Charny, married Jean IV de Chalon, prince d’Orange (1443 -1502). Their children:

d.1. Claude de Chalon-Arlay (1498 -1521), princesse d’Orange married Henri von Nassau-Dillenburg ,comte de Nassau-Bréda (1483 – 1538). Their son Rene de Nassau-Dillenburg, stathouder de Hollande (1519 -1544)

d.2. Philibert de Châlon, prince d’ Orange. His illegitimate daughter married François de Bourgogne, grandson of Philippe le Bon, duc de Bourgogne

- Francoise de Croÿ. Their son Charles de Luxembourg (1488-1530), comte de Roussy, comte de Brienne et de Ligny married in 1510 Charlotte d’Estouteville. Their children:

d.3. Antoine de Luxembourg (1530-1557), Comte de Ligny married Marguerite de Savoie, greatgranddaughter of Anne de Lusignan. Their children:

- Jean IV de Luxembourg, comte de Brienne married Guillemette de la Marck, daughter of Françoise de Brézé, comtesse de Maulevrier, daughter of Diane de Poitiers, duchesse de Valentinois

- Madeleine de Luxembourg married Christophe Jouvenel des Ursins (1525-1588), marquis de Trainel, descendant of Jean Jouvenel (d. 1431), «Garde de la Prévôté des Marchands pour le Roy», chevalier, Avocat du Roi au Parlement (1400), Chancelier du Dauphin Louis (1413), Président du parlement de Paris établi à Poitiers (1419) et de celui du Languedoc à Toulouse (1420), fidèle du Dauphin (futur Charles VII), seigneur de Trainel, Valmartin, Saint-Nom, La Bretèsche, et Crespières. Jean, l’historiographe de Charles VI parle de ses origines communes avec les Orsini de Naples,

de Rome et du Mont-Jourdain. Au milieu du XV° siècle, l’écu des Jouvenel porte des armes identiques à celles des Orsini(cf Portrait du Chancelier par Fouquet).Jean Jouvenel porte sur son sceau dès 1383 les armes des Orsini. Recognised by cardinal Giovanni Orsini as part of Italian Orsini family.

e. Helene de Luxembourg (~1440 – 1488) married Janus de Savoie, comte de Faucigny et de Geneve (1440 – 1491), Governor of Nice (1440–1491), the brother in law of her brother Pierre II, son of Anne de Lusignan and Louis de Savoie, duc de Savoie, prince de Piémont. Their daughter Louise de Savoie married:

-  her cousin Jacques Louis de Savoie (d. 1485), marchese di Gex, son of her uncle Amedeo IX, duc de Savoie and grandson of king Charles VII of France

- her cousin François de Luxembourg, vicomte de Martigues, son of her uncle Thibaut de Luxembourg

g. Charles de Luxembourg (1447- 1509), bishop of Laon,  had several illegitimate children by an unknown mistress, François de Luxembourg, seigneur de Bornival, Charles de Luxembourg

3.2. Married 2. Marie (1448 -1475) daughter of Louis I, duc de Savoie, prince de Piémont and of Anne de Lusignan. Their children:

- Louis (1467 – 1503), count of Ligny (from 1475), prince d’Altamura, duc d’Andria et de Venosa, capitaine de Charles VIII, lieutenant général de l’armée française, grand chambellan de Louis XII, gouverneur de Picardie

- Jeanne, nun at Gand

4. Catherine de Luxembourg (d. 1489) married in 1425 as his 4th and last wife Arthur III de Montfort de Dreux, duke of Bretagne, connétable de France (1393 -1458)

5. Isabella de Luxembourg, comtesse de Guise (as heiress of her uncle Jean de Luxembourg) married Charles IV d’Anjou, comte du Maine, comte de Forcalquier (1414 – 1473), third son of Louis II of Anjou and Yolande of Aragon.. Their children:

- Louise d’Anjou married Jacques d’Armagnac, duc de Nemours (b. 1430). Their heir Louis d’Armagnac, Duke of Nemours (1472- 1503), known for most of his life as the Count of Guise, He fought in the Italian Wars and was made viceroy of Naples in 1501. He was defeated and killed at the battle of Cerignola, April 28, 1503 (probably the first general killed in action by musketry), It is considered the first battle in history won by firearms (gunpowder small arms)

- Charles IV, Duke of Anjou, also Charles of Maine, Count of Le Maine and Guise. He succeeded his uncle René I of Naples in 1480 as 5th Duke of Anjou and Count of Provence. He also used the title of Duke of Calabria, in token of the claims to Naples he inherited from René. In 1474, he married Joan of Lorraine (d. 1480), daughter of Frederick II of Vaudémont, but they had no children. He died in 1481 after willed his inheritance to his cousin Louis XI of France, whose heirs thus obtained a claim to the affairs of Italy, pursued in the next decades (see Italian Wars)

6. Jacques de Luxembourg, seigneur de Richebourg (1423 – 1487). Married Isabelle de Roubaix.. His children:

- Isabelle de Luxembourg, dame de Richebourg married Jean de Melun, maréchal de Flandres. Their children: Francois de Melun, connétable de France; Marie de Melun, dame de Montricourt married  Jacques de Chabannes, maréchal de France

- Yolande de Luxembourg, dame de Roubaix

- Louise de Luxembourg

A.2.  Guglielmo del BALZO, 2nd Duke of ANDRIA, (d. ~ 1444) married Maria Brunforta.

His son Francesco del Balzo, Duke of ANDRIA (~1410- ~  1482), Grand Constable of the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily,  married his cousin Sancia de CLERMONT-LODEVE, de Chiaromonte, Contessa di Copertino (1407-1468), daughter of Caterina Orsini and granddaughter of Raimondello Orsini del Balzo and Marie d’Enghien. Their children:

a. Agilberto del BALZO (d.1487) married his cousin Maria Conquista ORSINI, daughter of Giovanantonio Orsini and granddaughter of Raimondello Orsini del Balzo.

b. Pietro del BALZO, Pyrrhus (Pirro) des BAUX (~1430-1487),  Duke of ANDRIA, Principe di Altamura  Grand Constable of the kingdom of Naples and Sicily married:

- his first wife his cousin Maria Donata ORSINI, Ducessa di Venosa, daughter of Gabriele Orsini del Balzo, Duca di Venosa and of Giovanna Ippolita Caracciolo del Sole,  and granddaughter of Raimondello Orsini. Their children:

b.1. Isabella del BALZO (d.~1533 in France) married in 1486 Federico I de ARAGON,  King of NAPLES, son of Isabella de Chiaromonte and Ferdinand (Ferrante) de Aragon, king of Naples.

Their daughter Maria de ARAGON (1503 - 1568) married Alfonso of AVALOS-AQUINO-FRANCAVILLA (1502-1546). Their children:

- Francesco Ferdinando d’ AVALOS-AQUINO-MONTESARCHIO, 5th marquis of Pescara and of Vasto (~ 1530- 1571) was commander in chief of the Spanish army in Lombardy and Piedmont, governor of the State of Milan (1560–63) and viceroy of Sicily (1568–71). Married his distant cousin Isabella GONZAGA of Mantua (1537 -~ 1589), granddaughter of Isabella d’Este.

- Innico d’Avalos d’Aragona (1536–1600), Chancellor of the Kingdom of Naples, bishop of Mileto in 1566, bishop of Sabina in 1586, bishop of Frascati in 1589, bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina in 1591.

b.2. Federico, Conte di Acerra, married in 1477 Constanza d’Avalos,

b.3. ISOTTE (d. 1530), Princess di Altamura, married at Andria in 1471 PIETRO de Guevara, Marchese del Vasto .

-         his second wife Lucrece d’Aragon, daughter of Ferdinand I de ARAGON, King of NAPLES  (1423? – 1494).

His possible child Antonia del BALZO (~1451- ~ 1538) married Gianfrancesco GONZAGA, 1st Duque de SABBIONETA, Principe de BOZZOLO (~1443-~ 1496). Gianfrancesco Gonzaga’s brother Rodolfo seigneur de Castiglione married Caterina Pico de La Mirandola sister pof famous philosopher Giovanni Pico de la Mirandola. Their daughter Camilla Gonzaga married Alfonso Castriota, marchese della Tripalda (d.1544).

Raimondello

(~1361- 1406),  Count of Soleto (1382), Duke of Benevento (1385-1401), Prince of Taranto (1393-1406), Count of Lecce (1401-06), Principe of Taranto, Conte di Lecce, Signore di Otranto, Nardò, Ugento, Gallipoli, Oria, Ostuni, Mottola e Martina Franca,  Duke of Bari, Grand Constable of the Kingdom of Naples, Gonfaloner of the Holy Roman Church, Capitano di guerra di Terra di Lavoro, Capitano di guerra di Terra di Bari e

Otranto, Capitano Generale del Duca d’Angiò, Protettore del Regno di Sicilia dall’ 1385.

Raimondello became the richest Italian feudal lord of his era. He was the heir of his mother’s brother Raimondo del Balzo, Conte di Soleto, Marshal of the Kingdom of Naples (d.1375 Naples), taking also his family name.

Married Maria d’ Enghien (~1364 -~ 1446),  Countess of Lecce, daughter of John of Enghien, Count of Castro, Signore di Nivelles, Presle, Omophita e Diskoria and of Bianca Sancia del Balzo dei Duchi d’Andria.

Their children:

B. 1. Giovanni Antonio Orsini (1393 - 1463) Principe di Taranto, Duca di Bari, Conte di Lecce, Acerra, Soleto e Conversano in  1406, Signore di Altamura, Conte di Matera e di Ugento, Nobile Romano e Gran Connestabile del Regno di Napoli. Married Anna Colonna, daughter of Lorenzo Onofre Colonna, Conte di Alba, principe di Amalfi (d.~ 1423) and of Sveva Gaetani. His illegitimate children:

- Maria Conquista Orsini (d. after 1487) Contessa di Ugento, Signora di Nardo e Castro married her cousin Agilberto del Balzo, Conte di Tricase e I Duca di Nardò in 1463. Their daughter Margherita del Balzo married Giovanni Francesco del Balzo

- Caterina Orsini, Contessa di Conversano, Signora di Casamassima, Bitetto, Gioia, Turi e Noci married Giuliantonio ACQUAVIVA de Aragon, 7th Duque d’ ATRI. Their son Belisario ACQUAVIVA de Aragon (~1459-~1528) married Sveva di Sanseverino. Their daughter Adriana ACQUAVIVA de Aragon married Ferrante  CASTRIOTA SCANDERBERGH, grandson of Giorgi Castriota Scanderbegh. Their daughter Erina  Castriota is ancestor of Elisabeth, Empress of Austria-Hungary

- Francesca married Giacomo Sanseverino, Conte di Saponara.

- Margherita married Antonio Centelles, Conte di Catanzaro,  Justiciar of Calabria.

- Bertoldo (died after 1488) Barone di Salice, Signore di Guagnano e Carovigno,  Conte di Lecce 1463-64.

2. his cousin Isabella del BALZO (d.~1533), granddaughter of Gabriele del Balzo. Frederick and Isabella spend the years after 1501 in exile. Isabella initially escaped to Ischia with her children, but later followed Frederick to France, where he was given an allowance. Frederick died in Tours on 9 November 1504. Isabella found a refuge for herself and younger children in the Duchy of Ferrara under the protection of Frederick’s nephew Alfonso d’Este, and lived there until her death, never remarrying. He commanded the advanced guard at the battle of Pavia, and took part in almost every battle between the French and Imperialists, and went with the Emperor to Tunis in 1535, was a liberal patron of letters and arts, and was very popular as Governor of Milan. He was a noted gallant and a great dandy. Brantôme writes of him–”qu’il était si dameret qu’il parfumait jusqu’aux selles de ses chevaux. Alfonso d’Avalos (1502-1546) led pivotal military campaigns against France and Turkey, eventually ruling Milan and serving as commander general of Italy under the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. raised in the lively, intellectual court of Naples, which included his aunt, the poet Vittoria Colonna, Avalos also became a leading patron of High Renaissance literary and artistic culture.

In Filippo’s house in Rome Catherine de’ Medici, the future queen of France, and Lorenzino de’ Medici were educated.Their children:

-         Piero (or Pietro) Strozzi (1510 – 1558), Italian military leader, marshal of France in 1554, superintendent of the Papal army and lord of Épernay in 1556. In 1564 he came on help to Emperor Maximilian II during the Ottoman invasion in Hungary, and the following year he faced again the Ottomans at the siege of Malta. In 1569 was appointed sole Colonel General (commander-in-chief of the army) of France, and subsequently took part to the long siege of La Rochelle. -         Leone Strozzi (1515 – 1554). In 1530, Strozzi became Knight of the Order of Malta, for which he was Prior in Capua. In 1536, he was named commander of the galleys of the Order, a position he held again in 1552.

He fought firmly the spread of Calvinism in Languedoc, supported by the French queen Catherine de’ Medici, who had grown up with Lorenzo after her father’s death. f. from a second marriage, Elena Maria Orsini married Prince (Shahzada) Djem Sayd (1459 Adrianople Palace -1495 Naples), Governor of Kastamonu (r1469-74) Governor of Karaman (r 1474-81), 2nd Vali Ahad from 1474, Sultan of Anatolia (28 May 1481) Defeated by his older half brother Bayezid  at the battle of Yenishir 20 June 1481. Djem was the son of Mehmed II Sultan of Turkey (r 1448-81) and of Princess Helen Paleologos (Helene Hatun) Daughter of Demetrios Paleologos, Despot of Morea. King Ferrante I of Naples, acknowledged Djem as a Royal cousin and provided the title of Viscount to Djem’s son.

3. Orso Orsini (died July 5, 1479) was count of Nola and fought as condottiero under the Duke of Milan and the Republic of Venice. Later he passed to the service of Ferdinand I of Naples, but, having not took part to the Barons’ conjure, was rewarded with the fiefs of Ascoli and Atripalda. He took part to the Aragonese campaign in Tuscany and was killed in the siege of Viterbo.

Their daughter Eleonore d’ ORLEANS is ancestor of Grimaldi, Princes de Monaco

-    Francois de ROHAN, Seigneur de Gie (d.~ 1559). His daughter Eleonore de ROHAN, Dame du Verger, Comtesse de Rochefort (~1539-~1583) married Louis VI de ROHAN, Prince de Guemene, Comte de Montbazon

A. 2 Sveva di SANSEVERINO married her cousin Belisario ACQUAVIVA d’ Aragona (~ 1459-1528). Their daughter Adriana ACQUAVIVA d’ Aragona married Ferrante (SCANDERBERGH) CASTRIOTA. Their daughter Erina Scanderbegh married her cousin Pietro Antonio di SANSEVERINO. Ancestor of Maximilian Joseph, Duke von/in BAYERN (1808 – 1888), father of Elisabeth (Sissy) Empress of Austria-Hungary.

  1. Angela CAETANI, (Inesinha) (d.~  1443) married Giovanni TOMACELLI. Their daughter Caterina TOMACELLI married Andrea Matteo ACQUAVIVA,  2nd Duca di ATRI. Their son Giosia  ACQUAVIVA, Count of TERRANO, 6th Duque d’ ATRI; (Knight of Golden Fleece) (d. 1462) . - Beatriz CAETANI married Bernardo Gaspar de AQUINO, Marques de PESCARA. Their daughter, Antonella d’ AQUINO,  Marquesa de PESCARA (d.~ 1493) married  Inigo (Knight of the Garter) d’ AVALOS, Conte de MONTE ODORISIO. Their son Indico d’ AVALOS, Conte de MONTE ODORISIO (~1467-1503) married his cousin Laura di SANSEVERINO
